THE CAPE COD WRITERS CENTER ENTERS ITS 47TH YEAR!
(FOR THE MOST RECENT CONFERENCE PROGRAM, GO TO THE 2008 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE WEB PAGE.)
For the past 46 years, during the third week in August,
Cape Cod Writers' Center has drawn together writers at various levels of experience. Over the years this annual gathering has evolved
into a summer conference nationally recognized in professional
writers circles, and now offers courses in fiction,
creative non-fiction, poetry, screenwriting, editing,
and publishing. A literary agent and editor are in residence throughout the
week and with faculty conduct individual manuscript
evaluations and mentoring
sessions. Evening speakers programs, a master class,
and poetry and prose readings round out the experience.Since 1963, distinguished
speakers and faculty at the conference have included Kurt
Vonnegut, Jr., Mary Higgins Clark, Marge Piercy, Robert
Finch, Art Buchwald, Dennis Lehane, Claire Cook, Wes McNair, and Affa Michael Weaver, among others. This summer the Newsweek contributing editor, McLaughlin Group regular, and author Eleanor Clift addressed the conference.
A tuition-free weeklong Young Writers Workshop (see Young
Writers webpage ) offered during the conference accommodates
approximately 45 twelve to sixteen year olds, selected
competitively through submissions judged by a committee
of published writers.
The location of the conference is an unforgettable Victorian
village in the Craigville area of Centerville, overlooking
Nantucket Sound.
Craigville Conference Center, on a bluff
overlooking Nantucket Sound, has been the unique
setting for the Cape Cod Writers Center summer
conference for the past 46 years.
Charming Cape
Cod cottages, many on the National Historic Register,
and an historic post office, inn, and Tabernacle
encircle the classic green, or small park, of
the original 1871 church campground from which
the village evolved.
Four inviting guest houses (Manor, Lodge, Seaside
and Inn) serve as lodging and classrooms with
views of fresh water ponds and marshes, and Craigville's
world-famous ocean beach.
Two books by Marion R. Vuilleumier, founder of
the Cape Cod Writers' Center, capture the rich
history of the village: Cape Cod's Craigville and Craigville Now and Then.
