Morning Session: 10:15 AM-12:45 PM How to Write a Great Scene
The filmmaker Howard Hawks once said, “A good movie is three good scenes and no bad scenes.” Substitute “movie” with “short story,” “novel,” “essay” or “memoir” and we might have a prescription for how to inject your story with dramatic, cinematic flair. Includes writing exercises with author and teacher performer.

Afternoon Session 1:15-3:45 PM Creating Charismatic Characters:
This interactive session explores intriguing questions for writers from all genres: how to make literary figures resonate with readers and how to infuse your own writing with memorable characters. We will explore Charisma, and the qualities that define it with examples from our favorite books and our own works. Come prepared with examples, and your own works in progress.
Arlene Kay crafts fiendishly clever mysteries with a heaping side of humor and a dash of romance. Her 13 published works include three stand-alone novels, and three series, The Boston Uncommon Series (available on audio); The Creature Comfort Series; and the current Cosmetic Crimes Series. Her fourteenth novel Dazzling Death, will release this August, followed by Surviving Spouse; and Death at the Altar. She is a former Senior Executive at the Treasury Department who has renounced her bureaucratic ways in favor of genteel murder (writing).
