Writing with AI, Thinking for Yourself

Writers have always worked with tools: dictionaries, critique partners, index cards spread across the floor, Google search, forums, and more. AI is the next evolution of what’s available to authors, but it also raises unfamiliar questions about originality, ownership, and creative judgment. This conversation makes room for both its possibilities and its problems, so you can decide where, or whether, it belongs in your process.

On November 18, novelist and AI collaborator Aileen Marshall will show how writers can use AI as a brainstorming partner: one that can generate possibilities, challenge assumptions, and leave every creative decision in your hands.

Through practical examples, you’ll explore where AI helps, where it may fall short, and how legal and creative questions affect authors. You’ll leave with techniques you can test, principles for protecting your voice, and a sharper understanding of what makes human authorship irreplaceable.

No tech background is required. Bring your opinion about AI, curiosity, your questions, and your laptop to this Zoom session so that you can discover how it can become your publishing friend rather than a foe.

Aileen Marshall is Director of AI & Emerging Technology at ICF, where she helps leaders and employees understand and adopt emerging technologies responsibly. Her debut science fiction novel, RIVERS OF THE MIND, Centers on telepathy, power, and human connection. Are you receiving notices from unknown sources praising your recent book and offering to increase your readership through the internet and providing you with dazzling sales? Have you continued to communicate with that source (often with a friendly name) until they ask for money?

If so you are not alone.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands of authors are being pestered by these messages, some of them bots.

Even if you have not yet been bothered you will need to understand those messages when you receive them. That's why we are inviting you to attend the January 20, 2027 Writers Night Out and learn about publishing scams.

This important program will be presented with the help of Authors Guild attorney Cheryl L. Davis and Kristen "Kiki" Ringer, a literary manger and publishing strategist.
