What makes television and/or movie producers want to option an “underlying” property for adaptation to the screen? What’s the difference between an option and a buyout? In this class, we’ll look at how to increase your chances of attracting a media buyer for your stories by providing a story structure that seems tailor-made for the screen. We’ll discuss captivating characters and why audiences want to spend time with them – as well as choosing settings, time frames and understanding production perimeters. We will focus on making your work appeal to the different media markets. Includes samples of query letters which get a producers’ attention.
Jule Selbo
Jule Selbo’s successful career in Hollywood has spanned over two decades. Among the giants and studios she’s worked with are George Lucas, Aaron Spelling, Lindsay Doran, Disney, Universal, and MTV. She’s written for film, television, story-driven podcasts, and for live theater. Her debut crime/mystery, 10 DAYS, A Dee Rommel Mystery, the first in a series was released in August 2021. Her previous award-winning novels are FIND ME IN FLORENCE (2018), DREAMS OF DISCOVERY, The Life of Explorer John Cabot (2019)BREAKING BARRIES, The Life of Laura Bassi (2020). Jule has written two screenwriting textbooks used in universities and by working writers in the United States and Europe.
