Designing Dev – A Comic Novel

The Land of Saints and Scholars is going to hell in a hand basket.

Office blocks and apartment buildings are springing up like weeds in every corner field. Mercs, Jags and Beemers crowd each new kilometer of EU-subsidized motorway. And Irish bank executives and politicians are reveling in it all, indulging themselves like Saudi royalty with crazy perks and pay raises.

There’s only one solution to this Celtic Tiger madness: Bring back Eamon de Valera – the Abe Lincoln and George Washington of Irish historical lore – to restore the nation. So when an Irish-American look-alike by the name of Mike Doyle pops up in a Boston suburb, that’s precisely what the Friends For A Contented Eire set out to do, putting forward the young American for president of his ancestral homeland.

To add spice to the tale, a London publishing house suddenly loses a top-shelf Irish author. Tara Hill has delivered on only two books of a five-book deal before her abrupt passing, and PageTurner CEO Ringo Patterson wants a replacement fast. So who better to fill the old girl’s shoes than Mike Doyle, with his uplifting tale of a simple American boy who grows up to be president…of Ireland!

Further along the way, Mike and Friends attract the attention of the governing True Eire Party, which decides that he’s one candidate too many and puts the wheels in motion to flatten his unorthodox campaign. The result is a series of madcap adventures involving Mike Doyle, his main rival Seanie Curtin, and the rest of the ill-fated presidential contenders, who drop out of the race in tragic circumstances when they are washed into the sea off the west coast of Ireland during a collective photo shoot gone wrong.

As if he hasn’t enough on his plate, Mike finds romance with Irish lass Roisin Devlin. The two meet quite by accident in her bookshop, where Mike is seeking refuge after an unruly mob – goaded by True Eire operatives – manages to sabotage a Doyle For President rally at Dublin’s MultiShoppe Mega-Mall. Quick-witted and resourceful, Roisin rescues Mike on the day and keeps his feet planted firmly on the ground as he quests for Ireland’s highest elective office.

So strap yourself in and come along for a tour of Ireland that you won’t find in any travel brochure…
