Here’s a roundup of our CCWC Members’ writing news for December:
Gustaf Berger’s essay, “Writing at Seventy,” will appear in Grubstreet’s Grub Daily in December.
Chip Bishop has several December signings for his latest book, Quentin and Flora: December 1–Luncheon Meeting, Falmouth Jewish Congregation, Seven Hatchville Rd., East Falmouth, 12 Noon; December 9 – Joint Meeting of Falmouth Books Clubs, Falmouth Senior Center, 300 Dillingham Ave. 1:30 p.m.; December 10 – Reading/signing at Mashpee Women’s Club, Brookside Club, Bourne, 10:30 a.m.
Chesterton, the weasel featured in Dean Coe’s picture book Chesterton Keeps His Town Jumping, has been cast in iron by Sandwich sculpture and glass blower, Michael Maygar. Supporting over 500 white lights, the 13’ high dancing Chesterton will be unveiled at 6:15, Dec. 5th on the Sandwich Library lawn followed by a book signing and refreshments inside the library. Chesterton Saves The Whale, a story about a stranded pilot whale and second in the series, has just gone to press.
Arlene Kay has several upcoming events: Dec. 1st—her novel Gilt Trip will be featured in the International Thriller Writers’ E-Zine The Big Thrill; Dec.4th—Arlene will sign copies of Gilt Trip at the New England Mobile Book Fair’s “Night of Mystery” in Newtonville (6-7 pm); Dec. 5th—CCWC Breakfast with the Authors—Arlene will give a dazzling presentation and sign copies of the Swann Series (Swann Dive; Mantrap; Gilt Trip); Dec.9th—Arlene will discuss “Creating Compelling Characters” at the Marstons Mills Library (6:30 PM).
Steven P. Marini will be participating in the second annual Gala Mystery Night at the New England Mobilt Book Fair on December 4 from 6-7 PM. It is located at 82 Needham Street in Newton Highlands. (www.stevenmarini.com)

Dwight Ritter’s new novel, Growin’ Up White, is the story of the immense impact that Georgey, a fifty-year-old black, quirky housekeeper from the Bahamas, has on a white family. Imbued with extra doses of homespun religion and humor, she shapes the life of physician Wayne Stoner, his wife, and their three children. The book is scheduled for release in December.
Ray Schumack published a second book of petite memoirs, this one titled Our Word Today – Our Great Depression Years: Funny Things Happen. It chronicles some of the things that happened to a family in the 1930s and describes some of the unusual experiences of that family’s descendants today.
Michael Shapiro and the Scargo Hill Poets are pleased to announce their new poetry group, meeting the first and third Thursdays each month in Dennis. Serious poets looking for fellowship and honest feedback on their work should contact the Writers Center to be put in touch with the group.

Barbara Eppich Struna’s historical novel, The Old Cape House, has been awarded First Place in Historical Fiction by Royal Dragonfly Awards for excellence in literature. Also in December at Struna Galleries in Brewster and Chatham, she will be signing and selling her second historical novel, The Old Cape Teapot, and, The Old Cape House.
