    For much of the 19th century the wives of ship captains accompanied their husbands aboard their ships. Largely unknown as a part of maritime history, their stories show an amazing side of shipboard life through a woman's eye. These "sister sailors" kept journals and wrote letters about their experience at sea and no full account of life on the broad ocean is complete without them.
